World’s biggest face recognition system in India
Face recognition the system is a technology used to detect, identify and verify people from a photo or
a video source. There are many ways to identify but the general procedure
involves the matching of some facial expressions from a given database and hence
recognize the person. It compares certain features with a given database. It is also described as a Biometric
Artificial Intelligence based application that can uniquely identify a person
by analyzing patterns based on the person's facial textures and shape. It was
initially a form of technology application but has recently seen a hike in our
day to day lives such as mobile applications using the face detection and
recognition system as their security locks. It is typically used as access
control in security systems and can be compared to biometrics such as
fingerprint sensors and, eye iris recognition and more. Recently, it has also
become popular as a commercial identification and marketing tools. Its other
application includes human-computer interaction, video surveillance,
automatic indexing of images, and video database, among others.
The world’s
biggest face recognition system is arriving in India.
As exciting as it
sounds it is much more interesting than this. The National Automated Facial
Recognition System (AFRS) is close to getting installed in India, with the tender
submission date being just 20 days away. This is an effort in the direction of
modernizing the police force, as information gathering, criminal
identification, verification and its dissemination among various police
organization and units across the country, as said by NCRB in its 172-page long
document. The technology will benefit the home ministry, state police and the
NCRB.
It will be a
vigorous system to identify the criminals, missing children/persons,
identifying the dead bodies and unknown traced children/persons all over the
nation. A depository of the photographs of all the criminals in the country, to
identify the enhanced patterns of the detected crime and their modus operandi
will be the key benefit and they will be aiding the crime prevention. It will
be helpful for the overall police department across the nation. As told by
NCRB, with the help of this software the state police can check the suspect
with the hotlist of criminals and also will be able to differentiate between
the victim and the convict. It will aid and accelerate the justice process of
our country thereby elevating the law of the nation.
Currently the
leading face recognition software are: Amazon Rekognition, Face Recognition and
Face Detection by Lambda labs, Microsoft Face API, Google Cloud Vision, and IBM
Watson's Visual Recognition, among others. In China, start-ups like Megvii and AI
unicorns like SenseTime, CloudWalk, and Yitu have been made facial recognition
commonplace in China. However, in India, Delhi police identified over 3000
missing children in just four days during a trial of a facial recognition
system.
However, there
are chances that technology can be misused. According to one of the
nation’s top cyber law expert Pavan Duggal, according to the Information
Technology Act, 2000, does not socially deal with the misuse of this
technology. “The first causality of the absence of regulator framework for
facial recognition technology is people’s right to privacy”, said by Praveen
Duggal. “In India there is not even a framework to regulate the storage of facial
recognition of data”, he added.
Some of the major
technologies’ giants including Amazon and Microsoft also agree that the
government doesn’t require to regulate this technology. Microsoft urged the government
to regulate them and enact legislation regarding this technology. In his new
book titled “Tools and Weapons” Smith said that the tech industry needs to step
up higher and do more address to address challenges related to regulation.
Given the
potential and strength for the abuse of this acing technology, government
across the world needs to start adopting new and powerful laws to regulate this
technology in 2019. Amazon has also defended the face recognition. It offers
“Rekognition”- a facial recognition tool to recognize and spot the criminals.
According to NCRB. The Automated Facial Recognition System (AFRS) to be
implemented that would help in automatic identification and verification of a person from the database such as videos, photos, sketches by comparing selected
features from an existing database.
A facial recognition system is a great
investigation enhancer for recognition, verification, and identification of
criminals, missing children/people, unidentified dead bodies and unknown traced
children/people. It can provide investigating officers with required tools and
information and hence elevate the overall development of the country.
Conclusion-Amalgam
of facial recognition technology with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
can do wonders in the near future, what are your views on the above article,
